Introduction

The following list consists of some best practices to ensure that you get the most out of your Metrix experience. Though there are important areas to cover other than those listed here, these are the most basic.

About Metrix terms
Terms listed on this page are defined in the Glossary of Metrix Terminology.
  1. Back up your data regularly.
Only the system administrator can back up the database via Metrix on the computer on which the Metrix server is installed. A Metrix administrator can backup the database using OSQL, though a Metrix administrator cannot restore a database using OSQL. Refer to Backing Up Data. Also refer to How to backup Metrix in MSDE for a method to automatically schedule backups.
  2. If you change the system administrator (sa) password, be sure to make note of it and keep it in a safe place.
If you change the password and forget it, you should un-install Metrix Server and re-install it. Before you un-install Metrix Server, create a backup of the database. See Problem – I changed my 'sa' password and forgot it. If you have an earlier version of Metrix installed, contact metrix@fcny.org.
  3. Create at least one Metrix administrator account.
Metrix administrators can create backups using OSQL. Refer to About User Roles for more information about user accounts.
  4. Don't alter any of the "CES" module interaction definitions.
The "CES" interaction definitions are included in Metrix versions 1.5 and later. Modifying any of these interaction definitions can cause Metrix to stop functioning in key areas. Refer to Important Information About 1.5 (and later versions) Interactions Settings for a list of "CES" module interaction definitions.
  5. Set up a process to ensure that your staff is entering data consistently.
Incorporate business rules and ensure that your staff follows them when entering data into Metrix. If you have naming conventions for queries, reports, and filters, ensure that they are followed.
  6. See the known issues page for your version when you encounter a bug or strange system behavior.
Before you try to troubleshoot a problem or problems you are having, check the known issues page (http://metrix.fcny.org/support/known_issues/) for your version. Your problem may have been addressed and the best fix would be to upgrade to the latest version of Metrix.
  7. Use the Metrix knowledge base to get answers to common questions.
The knowledge base has lots of reference material that covers a wide range of topics, from the user's and administrator's guides to helpful tip articles.
  8. Use SQL Server Express to manage your MSDE installation.
SQL Server Express is a helpful application that provides a graphical user interface for administering your MSDE Metrix installation. In contrast MSDE 2000, the version of MSDE installed with Metrix, has a command-line interface. You can download SQL Server Express here. Please note that SQL Server Express requires the .NET 2.0 framework. This is a free update available from Microsoft.
  9. Enter your organization's address and logo in the "report header" report.
The report header stores your organization's logo and address information and can be included in other reports. Refer to Working with the Report Header Template for more information.
