About Metrix

As leaders in developing innovative technology to meet the needs of under-served communities and the organizations that work with them, the Fund for the City of New York (the Fund) has created Metrix: The Database for Nonprofit Excellence.

Metrix is designed to be a key component in a strategy that addresses the chronic under-funding of administrative and technology support for community agencies, saving them thousands of dollars and ensuring that they are using today's dynamic technologies to be better managed, more responsive, and more competitive.

When organizations can count and measure what they do, they are more effective in providing services, generating resources, and seizing opportunities.

Metrix is designed to be owned by its community of users. This means that the Fund is working with developers and early users in New York City and beyond to eliminate bugs and develop other features that will allow for easy adoption. Metrix is most suitable in its current state for organizations that have a staff well-trained in the Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Access.

Metrix Benefits

Metrix is designed to eliminate the constraints that currently prevent nonprofits from having an effective database. Metrix is designed to allow nonprofits to perform those functions essential to their effectiveness, including the ability to:

  • Track who, what, where, and when for all important actions and people involved in any way with the organization
  • Report on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual basis on what has happened
  • Analyze the data to become more efficient, effective and strategic

Metrix is affordable

Metrix is available online through open-source licensing at no cost. Some organizations have the capacity ready to perform these functions in-house. For others, the costs are modest and will save an organization anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000 over commercial products and as much as $100,000 in consulting fees if something more tailored is needed.

Metrix does more

Popular commercial databases are limited to managing fund raising and development information. Metrix can be modified to address the specific tracking and reporting needs of individual organizations.

Metrix grows with an organization's needs.

As tracking and reporting needs change, the flexibility of Metrix allows it to be easily customized. Organizations can create custom tables, forms, and interactions to extend its functionality and to capture their unique needs.

See the Implementation Guide for more information.
