 These are instructions for moving the Metrix database and associated files from one server to another, for example, when upgrading to a new machine.

 {tip:title=Important}If you have an earlier version of Metrix, please contact mailto:metrix@fcny.org to get the correct Metrix installation files. You can check your version of Metrix by clicking {object}Help{object} and selecting {object}About Metrix.{object} {tip}
 {note:title=Note}Before you follow the instructions on this page, please see [Recreating User Accounts When Moving an Instance of Metrix from one Computer to Another]. {note}

 # If you have a full version of SQL Server, use Enterprise Manager to make a backup of your Metrix database on the old server. Otherwise, follow these instructions for using OSQL to make a backup: [Using OSQL to backup and restore a database].
  # Download the Metrix Server installer from http://metrix.fcny.org.
  # Download the Metrix Server installer from [http://metrix.fcny.org|http://metrix.fcny.org/download/].
 # If the new server already has MSDE 2000 or SQL Server 2000 installed on it, run *metrix_server_have_msde_XXX.exe*, where XXX is the version number. For example, if you are migrating Metrix 1.4.0 then use the Metrix 1.4.0 server installation file. If the new server does not have MSDE 2000 or SQL Server 2000 installed, run *metrix_server_need_msde_XXX.exe*. *IMPORTANT*: In either case you only need to run the *InstallShield* portion of the process. When the *Metrix Server Configuration Wizard* opens click the *Cancel* button. Click *Yes* to confirm that you want to exit the installation process. The *InstallShield* process does several things:
 #* Creates *C:\Program Files\fcny\metrix\server*
 #* Installs and starts MSDE 2000 (if you need it) and creates the METRIX instance
 #* Registers library files required by Metrix to function properly.
 # You are now ready to restore the database onto the new server. Copy the backup file from the old server to the new one, preferably to the Windows desktop. Use the *Logging in and Starting up OSQL* and *Restoring a New Database Using OSQL* instructions in [Using OSQL to backup and restore a database] to restore the database. Do not use the *Restoring an Existing Database Using OSQL* instructions to restore the database. Because you are creating the existing database on another machine it is considered "new" in that it never existed on the new machine.
 # The installation process automatically added the two server files (*interactsql.adp* and *reportsql.adp*) to *C:\Program Files\fcny\metrix\server*. Overwrite these files by copying the existing files from your old server. You can also copy the files to another directory so long as they are in a folder that is accessible to all Metrix users and allows them full control over the folder. If you choose to do this, rename or delete the files installed in *C:\Program Files\fcny\metrix\server* to avoid any confusion.
 # The two server files are still connected to the database on the old server. Follow these instructions for connecting to the newly restored database on the new server: [docs:Connecting to the database]. *NOTE*: use the *sa* user name and password when connecting to the database.
 # At this point, the only thing left to do is to modify each Metrix client so it is connected to the database and server files on the new server. Then use the same instructions from the previous step to connect the client to the database on the new server. Use these instructions to reset the references to the server files: [docs:Setting References].
 # Test each client to ensure they can connect to the database and server files on the new server. We recommend you do not overwrite the database on the old server until you are sure the installation on your new server is running satisfactorily.
